Liquid silicone to make molds

With silicone for molds you will easily be able to make personalized and original silicone molds from existing figures or objects, obtaining an exact replica with which to shape your candles, soaps and many more crafts. The result is elastic and flexible molds, easy to unmold.

Our liquid rtv silicone is a silicone elastomer presented in two components: the base silicone and the catalyst (included in the price). By mixing both components at room temperature and in the corresponding proportions, the mixture solidifies, since the rtv silicone alone would never do so.

The proportions of RTV silicone and catalyst are very important when making molds. You will always have to add a 5% catalyst to the amount of silicone you use. For example:

  • For 100 g of silicone,  5 g of catalyst.
  • For 500 g of silicone 25 g of catalyst.
  • For 1 kg of silicone, 50 g of catalyst.

The silicone is white, although the color can vary without affecting the quality of our RTV silicone, one of the best silicones on the market. To work with this silicone it is recommended that the ambient temperature is between 20 and 25ºC. Keep in mind if it is colder or hotter it is very likely that the percentage of use recommended for the catalyst will have to be varied.

This silicone is very easy to use, so it is perfect to start in the elaboration of handmade molds. It does not generate bubbles and unmolds well, but this process must be done very carefully to prevent the silicone from tearing. You have to unmold little by little and without sudden pulls so that it does not break. If you are looking for more durability and resistance it is better to opt for premium silicone.

How to make silicone molds

Choose the figure you want to capture in the molds. If the material of the figure is porous you must seal it with varnish or caps so that the silicone does not penetrate it and damage it. The next step is to look for a container, that is, a container in which the figure fits. It is important that the distance between the figure and the container is not much to save silicone and that the mold is easier to handle. Ideally, this container should be opened both above and below so that the unmolding process is easier. One of the open parts of this container will have to be covered with well-fixed and taut film. That will be the part that will touch the table.

After this, insert the figure into the bottom of the container, centering it as much as possible. Make the mixture of silicone and catalyst. Remember that proportions are very important. Before mixing, shake the silicone jar to unify the decanted product of the one that is not.

Now it's time to cover the figure, a process that is done in two phases. For the first you have to make a small amount of mixture, enough to cover the bottom of the container in order to seal the figure to the base of the container. If this is not done, the figure could float  and shatter the mold. Once you cover the bottom with this small amount let it dry to seal.

For the second phase you have to mix the silicone and the catalyst again, according to their proportions. Stir well and finish covering the figure completely. The waiting time until it dries is not marked, it will depend on the environment. In summer these molds are made more quickly than during the winter.

Once dry, it is time to unmold. To do this, you will need a round-tipped knife and a mixture of soap and water. Pour this mixture over the silicone and with the knife it borders a little helping it to detach from the walls of the container. After disposing of the soapy water, turn the container over, remove the plastic film and push down to remove the silicone from the mold. After this, and carefully, remove the figure from the inside of the mold.
